Toothache –What is good for a Toothache besides Orajel and Anbesol?

Toothache is mostly caused because of a deep tooth cavity. It is also caused because of infections and inflammations. When tooth cavity is left untreated, bacteria penetrates into the root of the tooth through small openings on the decayed tooth. When the bacteria invade the pulp tissues, it causes infection and lead to abscess formation. Abscess can give rise to severe toothache.

Anbesol and orajel-

These are two widely used pain killers which are used to alleviate toothache. Anbesol and orajel are available in liquids, gels, sprays, paste or as oral anesthesia. They contain benzocaine as the main ingredients. Apply it to a pain area and leave for few minutes. They will give you instant relieve from toothache.

However, anbesol and orajel –benzocaine products are known to cause a serious life threatening side-effect called as methemoglobinemia. Benzocaine pain relievers such as anbesol and orajel are available in over-the-counter oral gels, sprays and liquids. Methemoglobinemia is a serious condition where the percentage of oxygen in the blood stream is reduced. Reduced oxygen in the blood can cause death.

The condition was mostly seen in infants and children who were treated for teething. Therefore, benzocaine is not recommended to use in younger children below the age of two years.
